Indigo comes from a plant like henna does. Unlike henna indigo releases immediately. You can use indigo to get a jet black color. It is also used to to make browns.
There is no such thing as black henna and if someone has claims to be black henna I would run. Henna is one color, reddish orange. Indigo smells earthy and will release a blue color with in minutes of applying water to it. It is almost always a green powder form. If the powder is brown or black, more than likely it has PPD (harmful chemical) in it.
How to Apply indigo for a wicked jet black (any hair type).
Step 1. Mix henna with pure fresh squeezed lemon juice (not concentrate) the night before you are going to dye your hair. Mix lemon juice first leaving it thick but able to stir.
Step 2. The next morning add enough water to make it consistent to yogurt.
Step 3. Wash and dry your hair with a regular shampoo ( not dandruff shampoo!) and then section your hair to be ready for henna.
Step 4. Put on gloves and add natural henna to hair and leave on for 2 hours and rinse out. Make sure to remove any excess dye from scalp lines and cover with hair cap after it is applied. Also make sure you apply thick.

At this point you should have rinsed the henna and should have a red orange color on your hair. Lighter colored areas will be highlighted.
Step 5. Mix indigo with water to the consistency of yogurt and immediately apply to hair and cover and let stay on for 1 hour and rinse (wipe any indigo from skin and do not forget your gloves). DO NOT PREMIX!
You want to make sure you mix just before applying because the dye releases as soon as it is mixed.
If you have dye resistant hair add a teaspoon of salt.
If you see blueish, gray or green, do not panic this is normal and it will darken over the next 48 hours to black. Some grays or blonds may have to follow these steps a second time to achieve a darker black.
Everyone’s hair is different so we always suggest to do a strand test before doing your full head.
Indigo alone = blue, indigo and henna = black.
Indigo will fade faster than henna, you can perk it up using 10% henna and 90% indigo.
You can also just touch up the roots as your hair grows out so you do not have to redo the entire head.
Do not shampoo for 24-48 hours. 48 hours is best. You can use a conditioner if you have to.
